The Teenagers

Approaching the Brooklyn Music Hall entrance for my scheduled interview with the popular French, indie synth band, The Teenagers, I had an unrelenting feeling that I might be clubbed, dragged behind a dumpster and beaten to death by a group of feminist extremists.  Funny?  Perhaps.  A possibility?  Yes.  With lyrics like, "I fucked her. It was wild. She's such a slut," from the Teenagers' hit song "Homecoming" ringing in my head, it's understandable why I'd be afraid.

I made it safely inside the venue and sat down with Quentin Delafon (vocals), Dorian Dumont (guitar, synth) and Michael Szpiner (bass) to conduct what I thought was going to be a routine rock interview, however, it turned out to be a blunder in communication.  Every question posed was answered with a heavy French accent and at times I found myself laughing along with the band, but not knowing why.

With all obstacles aside, the band and I turned out a decent interview and I was able to witness The Teenagers perform an awesome show; one of their last before wrapping up their tour and heading back to Europe.  This is what was said:

StopBeingFamous:  So, when did you get into New York City?

Quentin Delafon:  Four days ago we flew in from London. After this, we're off to Chicago for Vampire Weekend, then we go to: Singapore, Tokyo, Australia, and New Zealand. A bit of the winter will be spent in the southern hemisphere, so we will be warm.

SBF:  All of your videos seem to have an underlying sense of theatrical comedy. Is this planned?

Quentin:  It's never planned. What usually happens is we have different directors pitch us ideas and we pick the one that we feel will work.  The video for "Homecoming" was made out of nothing. Kinga Burza, the director, did everything from home, the props and all.  The video for "Love No" was shot in Brooklyn and directed by Carolyn London and her husband. We got volunteers from MySpace to be in the video, which was definitely cool.  For "Feeling Better," our last video, we asked people to film themselves singing the song and we (The Teenagers) edited it; it's pretty funny.  That's how it usually works.

SBF:  In general, have you noticed any differences in the way people behave here; in  America as opposed to Europe?

Quentin:  In America, they're much more American (laughing). The crowds are always amazing.  I think we are more accepted by American people because we are French singing in English with quite a strong accent; it's exciting. In France, not as many people are surprised or impressed by us.
.
SBF:  Let's talk about song writing. How do you guys come up with ideas for songs?

Quentin:  Well, usually, we get drunk. Dorian (Guitar, Computer and Vocals) will make the music and we'll sit together and put words to it with a glass or two.

SBF:  What's the craziest thing to happen to you while on tour?

Quentin We played San Francisco and this girl came on stage and went behind Dorian and started doing yoga poses (laughing).  I think it was "Homecoming."  We asked girls to come on stage and dance and this particular girl started doing yoga (laughing).

SBF:  Are you guys into Hip-Hop at all?

Dorian Dumont:  Yes. I like Booba.

SBF:  Booba?

Dorian:  He's French. It's the most American Hip-Hop in France.

Quentin:  I'm into Ghostface Killah.

SBF:  Are there any artists or bands you'd like to collaborate with in the future?

Quentin:  Ghostface Killah; he's amazing.  I think he has a song with Cassius, the French band.  That would really come out of the blue; that collaboration.

SBF:  How have your lives changed since you've become popular?

Dorian:  I haven't changed the people I hang out with too much. We ( The Teenagers) have known each other for ten years, so for us it's the same.  People laugh at our jokes a lot more.

SBF:  Some critics have deemed your lyrics to be misogynist and offensive to women.  How do you respond to this?

Quentin:  We do core, pop music.  We are not trying to shove any political crap or message.  When I listen to music, I don't really want to be, "um... maybe it's going to sound shallow, but I just want entertainment."

SBF:  Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Quentin:  Hello, Ally McBeal (Calista Flockhart)  How is that eating disorder going?  End of Interview.
