BBU
By Ferrari Sheppard

Whether you know them as Bin Ladin Blowin’ Up—or “Black Brown and Ugly” (as they joke onstage)—Chicago-based rap quartet BBU is one of the most explosive groups to watch perform. With bass- and venue-shaking anthems like “Chi Don’t Dance,” BBU is like punk rock on steroids. Bringing Chicago vernacular and searingly conscious lyrics to the table, with lines like “B.E.T. taught me to hate me,” it’s clear that BBU is a force to be reckoned with.

I caught up with the group—which consists of Jasson Perez, Richard Wallace, MC ILLEKT, and DJ Esquire—after their performance this February at the Congress Theater in Chicago, where they shared the stage with Mos Def and Doom, and this is what was said:  Continue Reading.

Miike Snow
By Ferrari Sheppard

Miike Snow is a force of nature. The trio includes the lyrical and vocal brilliance of Andrew Wyatt, and the sonic architecture of Swedish-based production duo Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg (professionally known as Bloodshy & Avant, the producers responsible for Britney Spears’ hit single "Toxic"). Currently on tour in support of their 2009 self-titled album, Miike Snow continues to move crowds and create infectious music.

I caught up with lead singer Andrew Wyatt for brief interview, and this is what was said:

Yukimi Nagano
By Ferrari Sheppard

It’s human nature to compare things that are new, to things that are familiar. It’s our way of understanding the changing world around us. Nevertheless, making comparisons between music acts can lead to a delayed reaction to genius. Swedish-based electronic soul band, Little Dragon, can’t validly be compared to anything we’ve ever heard. Headed by Swedish-Japanese singer and songwriter, Yukimi Nagano, Little Dragon has a sound that’s so soothing you’d have to hear it to believe it.

Currently on tour in support of their second studio album, Machine Dreams, which was released in September 2009 on the indie label Peacefrog, Little Dragon continues to burst forward with a passion and soul that we haven’t seen in years.

I caught up with the lead singer of the four-piece, Yukimi Nagano, for a phone interview while she was in her hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden. There was a lot background noise. Continue Reading.

Hollywood Holt
By Ferrari Sheppard

Confident, charismatic, fun and energetic are words to describe Hollywood Holt—the Chicago-based MC, breakdancer, DJ and hype man—but rarely do we get to see the other side of the man who has solidified himself at the apex of a group of up-and-comers. As one half of the duo featured in the Hollywood Moon Tour in early 2009, Holt toured with Kid Cudi, and his songs have been featured on video games such as Fight Night Round 4, and most recently the television series Gossip Girl. Aside from performing and touring, you can find Holt doing what most people who’ve had an opportunity to see him live would neverbelieve—being introverted and thoughtful.Continue Reading.

Rye Rye
By Ferrari Sheppard

Less than two months ago, 18-year-old MC Rye Rye was set to embark on a tour with A-Trak in support of her debut album Go! Pop! Bang!. The M.I.A. protégé recently pulled out of the tour, and released a statement on her blog stating why: She's pregnant. But the latter part of ‘09 will see Rye Rye back in the spotlight─writing and performing at lightning speed.

I caught up with Rye Rye, whose birth name is Ryeisha Berrain, to talk about her album and her future goals. This is what was said:Continue Reading.

Asher Roth
By Ferrari Sheppard

With his debut album Asleep in the Bread Aisle due out next month, Hip-Hop's newest sensation, Asher Roth, has proven he’s at least awake enough to climb the charts: His single “I Love College” hit number six on iTunes this month, wedged in between T.I’s “Dead and Gone” and “Crack a Bottle” by Dr. Dre, 50 Cent and Eminem. Roth’s first professional release was under the wing of the legendary DJs Drama and Cannon as part of The Greenhouse Effect mixtape. It'll be interesting to see where the charismatic MC from Morrisville, PA will end up next.

I caught up with Asher to talk about weed, women and Asleep in the Bread Aisle, scheduled to be released on 4/20, and we had a blast.
